A couple of years ago I decided I was tired of being tired, overweight, not having any specific goals for just me, and feeling out of control in my life. Life was going by quickly. I wasn’t feeling like I had enough crossed off of my Lifetime To Do List yet and I was in my 40s. After much soul searching and a few tears I decided I was going to go for it and do something BIG! Running a marathon, 26.2 miles!, had been in the back of my mind for many, many years. Ever since my amazing sister, Nicole of SocialNicole fame, had done two marathons. I was in awe of her and knew I wanted to do the same.
And then I blinked my eyes and 10 years had passed.
And I was married. And a mom with two young children. And 40+ years old sitting on my coach crying for change. That was the day I made a choice. I would run the Walt Disney World Marathon 2013!
I trained hard for 9 months. Before that I had only ever done a 5K race. I went from a 5K to a marathon. Because that’s the kind of girl I am- dive in head first! (As an aside, this is not the normally recommended course to take for doing a marathon. I worked VERY CLOSELY with a certified coach to ensure that I was being a safe as possible.)
And I did it! I crossed the finish line. And I cried some more. My life would never be the same.
It’s said that when you cross the finish line of a marathon your life will change, you will not be the same person as before you began.
I’m walking proof of that!
Now here I am 1 1/2 years later, many other races finished including a 70.3 mile Ironman! That’s another story for another day. I find myself unmotivated and lacking direction…again. Having spent the past 8 months doing minimal workouts, eating so/so with lots of sugary sweets, and generally just not feeling the drive to get off the coach. So what’s a girl to do?
Sign up for another marathon, of course!
Which brings me to today, the first day of getting my butt off the coach and hitting the pavement toward new goals. I’m registered to run the Space Coast Marathon on November 30th out at Coco Beach, FL.
I was up at 5AM to run- for real! (It’s summer vacation, I sleep in as long as possible. This was a super big deal!)
I created my personal 20 week marathon training plan.
I ate well.
I took a really super long nap!! 5AM is really early! LOL
I’m on the road to my 2nd marathon…and I’m taking you along with me. For better or worse I’ll be sharing some of my experiences along the way. I hope that seeing the day in and day out of accomplishing a big goal will inspire you to start on the road to your own BIG goals too!
